The Capuchin Franciscans
Father Angelus is a member of the St.
Augustine Province of Capuchin Franciscans. The Capuchins are a reform in the
Franciscan Order, founded by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century.
From the beginning of the Order, there has always
been a spirit of reform, an effort to recapture the original charism of St. Francis and
his first followers. The pivotal points of the reforms revolve around the spirit of
prayer and the spirit of poverty. When the heart is not taken up with temporalities,
there is more time and energy for prayer and union with God.
The Capuchin reform of the 16th century is the last major
reform in the First Order of St. Francis that includes the brothers and the priests.
Padre Pio of Italy and Father Solanus Casey are probably the most revered Capuchins
of the 20th century to those Americans who know the Order. The Capuchins are
expected to give the contemplative dimension to the Franciscan charism. When there
is a choice between work and prayer, the Capuchin chooses prayer. It is out of this
tradition that Father Angelus comes with words that overflow from his heart in union with
his maker.
